Alice

[About free-jazz] It felt like if you were to just walk out of this door and just see a new world, a new universe with so many opportunities in it. You know so many things to discover and so many vistas to look upon. It was so perfect for me. And I never felt locked in. I said what a freedom, and to have it without all of these boundaries and restrictions. Not that it was wild and undisciplined, because that was something we'd talk about. He said, [John Coltrane] 'If my music ever became such that I'm playing without thought or without concentration, I'm finished.' He said, 'I'd never want to play'."
